Our Story
At the turn of the millennium, Regina Pröhm and Michael Schrottmeyer founded the website. At first, exclusively
as a booking portal for the Berlin antique and collectors' markets they organize, whose special magic they bring online 1 to 1 in the following.
In 2003, the site is expanded into a marketplace, and the focus and mission are clear. No random secondhand goods, no business with fast moving consumer goods, no mass-produced goods. A digital marketplace for people who don't want too much of the wrong things, but just the right things. In 2014, more than 1 million items were already offered on the platform. More and more independent professional dealers are joining in.
Without outside financing, the company continues to develop piece by piece. This is no easy undertaking, because time-honored individual pieces require incomparably more time, attention, detailed descriptions, intuitive search systems and much more to depict their special features.
With careful attention to detail, an enthusiastic team and passionate sellers, oldthing is becoming Germany's go-to source for historical finds in all price ranges. In 2021, multilingualism will be implemented and separate websites for the USA, Canada, Australia, England, France and Poland will go online.
The down-to-earth, sustainably growing company was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Berlin, Germany.
How oldthing works
Unlike other portals, oldthing does not use any auction format. All sales are made exclusively as fixed prices. Private individuals as sellers of their own collections or heirlooms are admitted. However, commercial suppliers predominate.
The decisive factor is the product range and compliance with our presentation and user experience standards..
All articles on the marketplace come from sellers who offer their articles through their oldthing store on the marketplace. Occasional sellers can offer up to 10 items
for free in the promotion store 3 months.
The website acts as an intermediary. To protect its buyers, transactions up to an amount of 250 euros are secured by an in-house buyer protection.
