CDs und gebrauchte CDs haben den Markt im Sturm erorbert. Als man sich 1984 die erste CD kaufen konnte, wurde sie noch belächelt. Aber CDs sollten das Musik hören revolutionieren. Der größte Vorteil: Beim optischen Abtasten durch einen Laserstrahl fällt das Rauschen und Knistern weg, das bei der LP unvermeidbar ist. Übrigens wandert die Laserdiode des CD-Players, anders als der Tonarm des Plattenspielers, von innen nach außen. Der neuen Qualität der Musik konnte niemand widerstehen, ob er nun Rock und Pop oder Elvis Presley Musik mochte oder auf Jazz, Soul, Klassik stand. 1990, sechs Jahre später, konnte die Industrie fast doppelt so viele CDs wie LPs verkaufen.
Die Platz sparende CD hat die Schallplatten aus den Regalen verdrängt. Auf die praktische Größe haben sich Ende der 70er angeblich die Marktführer Sony und Philips geeinigt. Der damalige Vizechef des japanischen Herstellers, ein Beethoven-Fan, wollte, dass die neunte Symphonie mit einer Spiellänge von 75 Minuten auf einer CD abgespielt werden kann. Das entsprach einem Durchmesser von zwölf Zentimetern. Für den niederländischen Konzern war dagegen entscheidend, dass CDs in Anzugtaschen mitgenommen werden konnten. Aber kein Problem: Der große Komponist passte in die Tasche.
Heute, nach nicht einmal drei Jahrzehnten, ist die Welt des Pop ohne CDs gar nicht mehr vorstellbar. Längst kann man gebrauchte CDs kaufen und verkaufen. Auch Sammler haben sie für sich entdeckt und zum Teil bereits irrwitzige Kollektionen an Musik angelegt, von Rock über Jazz und Soul bis Pop. In Läden kann man neue und gebrauchte CDs kaufen, im Internet lässt sich eine gebrauchte CD problemlos verkaufen.
Selbst trotz zahlreicher technischer Neuheiten, vor allem Musik-Downloads, kaufen Leute weiterhin CDs . Das liegt daran, dass beim MP3-Format Klangqualität verloren geht. In dieser Hinsicht sind CDs unschlagbar. Außerdem hält man mit der kleinen Scheibe immer noch ein Stück Musik in der Hand – und das entspricht wahrscheinlich einem zutiefst menschlichen Bedürfnis.
